Sunpentown IM-150US is another undercounter ice maker we tested, and even though it is not portable and suitable for small spaces unlike some other models we mentioned, it has plenty of useful features, and it is a good solution for those who want to buy a high quality and relatively cheap undercounter ice maker.
As far as design is concerned, this model comes in a combination of black cabinet and silver door made from stainless steel. It cannot be found in other combinations of colors, but black since and silver are common colors of kitchen appliances, it is most likely to go well with the rest of the kitchen interior.
Sunpentown IM-150US is intended for both free standing and built-in use. The vent is on the front side of the machine, which enables it to be built in most standard kitchen cabinets. It also has a reversible door, which means that they can be built in on any side, allowing you to adjust the opening of the door to the position your ice maker takes.
The dimensions of this appliance are 18” in depth, 15” in width and 25” in height, which make it rather large but still possible to fit in standard kitchens and under standard countertops. However, it may not be suitable for small kitchens.
Our rating: 8.1/10
This model is not only an ice maker, but it is also a freezer. This means that once the ice is made, it will remain stored and keep the shape inside the storage container. The container is capable of storing up to 6 pounds of ice, which means that the bin is quite large, justifying the size of the ice maker itself. The fact that it is also a freezer makes it possible to use this machine outdoors as well as indoors, even in the hot weather.
When it comes to installing this ice maker, professional installation is recommended. You get a comprehensive user manual with the product, and you can also find it online - but it is safer to let a professional do it after all. Unlike small and portable ice making machines, this one requires water supply pipe, which is better to be installed by a licensed plumber in order to avoid any inconveniences. The water line connection is included in the purchase, so you do not have to buy it separately.
As far as the amount of ice is concerned, we already mentioned that this model is capable of storing up to 6 pounds of ice, which is quite enough to have stored in a freezer at any time. It produces in total 12 pounds of crescent-shaped ice per day. We found this amount sufficient, but some users may not - depending on their needs.
In addition to the bucket being rather large, it is also removable for easier operation and cleaning of the machine and all its parts. Since this model stores the ice and keeps it frozen, there is no melting - which means that this device does not require draining. Like most other appliances of this type, it is equipped with an indicator telling you when the ice bin is full, and when this point is reached, the machine will shut down and stop making ice automatically. Also, it also has an on/off button which you can use to control the ice production on your own.
Even though this machine does not offer you several sizes of ice or different color of the appliance itself, what we noticed is that it is fairly reliable when it comes to the production and storing of ice, which means that you always know what to count on. Also, it is very quiet while working, which is a great advantage when compared to other relatively cheap undercounter ice makers.
The downside of this model is that it requires manual defrost. There is no too much frost formed, but it still requires defrosting once in every couple of months. When it first appeared, this model was not exactly a cheap ice machine. However, as time goes by and the new models are launched onto the market, this model can now be found at a very reasonable price, and it can be quite an affordable choice.
